Choose Square if…
Pick Square if your business is based in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, the UK, Ireland, France or Spain and you want integrated card readers, online selling and a large app ecosystem.
Square is one of the best-known point of sale systems in the world, so many shop owners search for it first. The catch for the Caribbean is where it works. Square's card acceptance is limited to a short list of countries, and none of them is in the English-speaking Caribbean. Shopkeepa is a pre-launch alternative built for shops here.
Pick Square if your business is based in the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan, the UK, Ireland, France or Spain and you want integrated card readers, online selling and a large app ecosystem.
Pick Shopkeepa when it launches if your shop is in the Caribbean, takes mostly cash or uses your own bank terminal, and you want selling and stock in one simple app with your currency and GCT or VAT as settings.

Square's own help pages say card payment acceptance with the Square app is available in the US, Canada, Australia, Japan, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France and Spain. Its developer documentation says that for sellers outside those regions, the only payment methods available are external payments and cash payments. It also says Square hardware only works in Square-supported countries.
Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Guyana are not on that list as of 6 October 2026. We could not confirm from Square's pages that a shop in those countries can open a seller account at all, so check with Square before you spend money on hardware. Whatever you find, the main reason owners choose Square, taking cards through one integrated reader, is not available to a shop in Kingston, Port of Spain or Georgetown.
Square's US pricing page lists a free plan, a Plus plan at US$49 per month per location and a Premium plan at US$149 per month per location. Its retail pages put inventory management, vendor and purchase order management and cost of goods reports on the paid level. Card fees are charged on top, and those only apply where Square processes cards.
Shopkeepa has no price yet. What we can say is how the product is shaped: stock tracking is part of the first release, not a higher tier. See inventory tracking and sales and profit reports.
Square's offline guide says its point of sale apps require an internet connection at all times to function optimally. Offline payments are possible when allowed, and they must reconnect within 24 hours and no later than 72 hours. That is built for short outages. A shop that loses power or signal often needs to know how its tools behave then. Shopkeepa is built with unreliable connections in mind, and we will describe exactly how it behaves before launch. See also power cuts at the till.
If you have been using Square from abroad or in a supported country, export your item library to a spreadsheet, tidy it to name, price, quantity, and cost, category and barcode where you have them, and import it into Shopkeepa with CSV or Excel import. A preview shows what will be saved and flags duplicates. Variants need to become separate products, because Shopkeepa's first release has none. Finish with a rapid stock count so your starting numbers are right.
Square lists card acceptance in eight countries and Jamaica is not one of them. Its developer documentation says sellers outside those regions can only use cash and external payments. Check Square's support pages for the latest before relying on it.
Neither country is on Square's list of countries with card acceptance as of 6 October 2026.
Most take cards through their bank's terminal or a local provider such as DimePay, and many are cash-first. Shopkeepa lets you record whichever payment type the customer used without processing it.
No. It is pre-launch, and the way to try it is to join the early access list.
Shopkeepa will import products from CSV or Excel files with a preview step. Export your Square items to a spreadsheet and tidy the columns before importing.
